Melanin, a Skin Identical antioxidant, naturally protects epidermal keratinocytes by forming a protective cap over DNA that defends against UV light. When applied topically, Melanin acts as a natural sunscreen booster that enhances protection against the entire Solar Constant. In addition, Vitamin D precursors––which are found in the plasma membranes of skin cells—are stimulated with exposure to sunlight and synthesise active Vitamin D, which has photo-protective effects, decreasing DNA damage and oxidative stress while reducing inflammation. Similarly, Heat Shock Proteins are able to shield skin cells from thermal damage by expanding and unfolding in the presence of heat to protect cells from becoming dry and dehydrated.
